The Waterfront Theorem: an integrated and creative planning approach

2016

Waterfronts are sensitive interfaces between land and sea, creative interfaces between urban and environmental components, social interfaces between nodes and networks. They not only coincide with the areas of infrastructure that are gathering on the coast, not only with the shoreline or the environmental components of the coastal territories. They are hired by the project as complex interaction of crossing flows, stratified identity of urban communities: fundamental element of the environmental system, synthesis of landscape, space and community, a place of solidification of the identity of the social, cultural and economic community (Carta, 2009). The management of urban interface of wate…

The Colour Plan of Egadi Islands

2018

The Egadi Islands, at the western end of Sicily, preserve a peculiar architectural and environmental heritage. The work of people – related to tuna fishing, stone extraction and agriculture – has created, over time, an exceptional landscape. The nature, colour and texture of the local stone have given shape to a traditional architecture that, today, risks to disappear and to be replaced by new anonymous buildings. Furthermore, the pressure of tourism threatens to damage this delicate balance established, over centuries, between people and environment. Therefore, the Local Administration decided to adopt a Colour Plan to manage the inevitable processes of territorial transformations. The Arc…

The Hydraulic space of the Conca d'Oro of Palermo as a paradigm of the Mediterranean water sensitive city.

2016

The orchards TAL on Palermo periurban countryside follows the Arab conception of hydraulic space. The concept of Hydraulic space combines several technologies to achieve the best use of water resources by differentiating agricultural productions in time and space and by connecting different functions (hydraulic, climatic and aesthetic) in a homogeneous system. This conception of space extends to the whole Conca d’Oro across the countryside to the heart of the historical town to the intimate domestic space in the end. During the Norman age the Zisa source used to refresh and embellish the interior of the castle before water slides towards the gardens; on the surface of Fawara-Maredolce lake …

Gibellina City of Art

2018

The earthquake that hit Western Sicily in 1968 destroyed, among others, the town of Gibellina. Back then, the town was abandoned and a new city was built ex novo at a distance of eighteen kilometres from the original site. The ex novo foundation of a new city requires the interaction of two fundamental components: one characterised by a physical-formal nature, related to urban layout and architectural characterisations, and the other related to socio-cultural issues concerning the relationships between citizens and their city. If the rst component might be dealt with by means of theories and techniques from architectural and urban disciplines, how is it possible to deal with the even more i…

Dubai, da città in transizione a città resiliente?

2020

L'articolo presenta il lavoro, Dubai Pop-Up. The article presents the work "Dubai Pop…

Culture, communication and cooperation: the three Cs for a proactive creative city

2009

The network of European Union creative cities is a powerful new configuration of dynamic, innovative and action-oriented cities, able to transform the space using their network of cultural heritage and activities. From a vision in which the more competitive cities are those able to attract the creative class must go to a vision in which the city becomes generates creativity, presents itself as a powerful incubator of economies based on creativity, culture, research and artistic production. The cities will have to invest in the experience economy, strengthening their identity. The Creative City 3.0, therefore, is an active tension, that requires a long-term vision ability, and calls us to ac…

Research on ecological design to enhance comfort in open spaces of a city (Valencia, Spain). Utility of the physiological equivalent temperature (PET)

2013

For many years now, research has focused on issues concerning making cities easier to live in and some of the most important of these concern climatology and thermal comfort issues. There is also a growing awareness of the importance of open spaces and green areas, as key elements in providing opportunities for human interaction, leisure and physical exercise. They are important for all inhabitants, but particularly so for children and the elderly population. Of especial interest are the studies which have examined the interaction of comfort with the urban climate. This issue was studied throughout the twentieth century, but recently the role which can be played by biometeorological indices…

Il fondamento effimero : seminario residenziale di allestimento urbano e architettura effimera, Tonezza del Cimone, 25-31 Agosto 2018

2019

Tourist places often suffer a fate that sees them seasonally abandoned, so that their image drastically changes over the course of the year, generating gaps that need an identity rather than waiting for the festive mass passing by. Professors, students, teacher assistants collaborated together in a weekly on-site workshop meeting and listening people resident with a bottom-up approach.

A Generative Design System to interactively explore different urban scenarios

2010

In this paper we present a new parametric approach based on urban regulation, in order to generate digital models of building, directly within a three-dimensional geo-referenced environment. The system allows user, through implementation of specific generative procedures, to manage interactive architectural design processes. The designer is able to explore all possible infinite scenarios and the various possible design alternatives, by changing the parameters values and verifying in real time the results of the changes. This paper presents a short review of the main related works and an experiment.

A Generative System to support architectural and urban design

2011

The work presents a system able to generate three-dimensional models of buildings, directly within a 3D geobrowser as Google EarthTM. For this purpose we have developed the prototype of a parametric application that allows the designer to handle the architectural shape by using the main constraints belong to urban regulations. The system integrates two different research topics: modelling in geo-referenced environment and modelling constraints. Compared to the related works (Building Modeling within georeferenced environment), our application is the first Generative Design System based on the urban regulation. It is a Decision Support System (DDS), useful at the early stage of city planning…
